Google’s AI Overviews Ditch Reddit
After encountering some out-of-place results, Google has removed Reddit as a source for AI-generated overviews. Now, AI overviews prioritise reputable sources like YouTube, LinkedIn, and government sites. Additionally, the length of these overviews has decreased by 40%, averaging around 2,633 characters. Notably, 93.67% of AI overviews now link to the top 10 organic search results, ensuring higher relevance and quality of information.
YouTube is Testing Longer Ad Breaks
I think it’s fair to say that waiting to skip a YouTube ad can feel like the longest 5 seconds of all time, and you’re not alone in that feeling. Apparently, 79% of users prefer longer periods of time uninterrupted while watching content. So, in a move to please viewers, YouTube is testing expanding its ad break by 29% and there are already talks this might be increasing to 50%. However, sadly this is only happening on CTV at the moment (Connected TV (CTV) includes streaming devices, smart TVs, and gaming consoles.) In this test Ads on CTV will be cramped into longer but dispersed blocks, similar to ad breaks on traditional TV channels.
Google Ads on Netflix?
After introducing cheaper subscription packages that contain ads, Netflix has taken another step forward on its advertising journey, offering advertisers a new opportunity to reach Netflix’s engaged audience through Google’s advanced advertising platform. Google has announced the integration of Netflix’s advertising inventory into Display & Video 360 (DV360), marking a significant expansion in digital advertising options for marketers.
Meta is Getting More Transparent
As part of its ongoing efforts to improve transparency and trust, Meta updated its ad transparency tools. These updates include more detailed insights into ad performance and spending, which are accessible to both advertisers and users.
This could be a significant update in competitor analysis. Whereas before this tool was useful for seeing what your competitor’s ads looked like. This new information can help in identifying successful tactics, uncovering potential gaps in the market, and optimising one’s own advertising efforts to stay competitive in the digital landscape.
Users are Flocking to Threads
After a record-breaking launch, was believed to have signed up more than 100 million users in less than five days. Since its launch, there has been continual debate about whether Threads or X (F.K.A Twitter) was the superior text-first social media platform. Even after an impressive launch, Threads continues to grow users, in July 2024 Threads was the third most downloaded app on the iOS App Store.
This is coupled with Meta now facilitating crossposting to Threads from Facebook and Instagram, making it easier to include in your marketing strategy.
