The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new regulation or ‘law’ and will apply in the UK from 25 May 2018. It replaces the current Data Protection Act and is the most important change in data privacy regulations in 20 years. GDPR applies not only to businesses controlling or processing data within the EU, but also those outside that offer goods or services to individuals in the EU. The government has already confirmed that Brexit and UK’s decision to leave the EU will not affect GDPR.
If you’re unsure where all that leaves you or want to know where to start, then at SocialB, we have prepared a GDPR Check List covering the basics, to help give some guidance to our clients. One of the biggest changes we all face is obtaining consent when collecting data from your website, not only do you need consent buttons but also very clear privacy notices. Individuals will have new rights too, such as having access to their own personal data and the right to be forgotten.
GDPR is something that every business needs to review. If you want to know more about GDPR compliance and specifically what GDPR will mean for digital marketing, we can help.
